Black mold: Stachybotrys Chartarum

The mold that is commonly referred to as “black mold” is the species Stachybotrys chartarum.

It is recognizable by its black color when it matures, and particularly thrives in wet locations.

Stachybotrys chartarum is greatly feared by people because it is capable of releasing mycotoxins into the air, which may cause serious health problems.

How to identify Stachybotrys chartarum

While Stachybotrys chartarum is commonly referred to as “black mold”, there are other species of black-colored molds, such as Cladosporium and Aspergillus niger.

Therefore, it’s important to consider certain characteristics in order to determine the differences:

This mold thrives in humid environments, making it commonly found in areas such as basements, bathrooms, laundry rooms, attics, garages, kitchens, and any other area where ventilation is inadequate.

Black mold grows differently than other molds, with a wet and slimy texture as opposed to a fuzzy one. When dry, it’s more powdery or sooty in appearance.

It appears as dark patches of irregularly shaped circles.

People often describe its odor as earthy and similar to rotting vegetables.

As black mold, as well as any other molds, can be potentially hazardous to certain individuals, it’s essential to eliminate it in order to ensure safe living conditions.
